Question of the week.

Question of the week.

I’m starting a new feature. Every Monday I’m going to ask a question. You have until Wednesday to answer it in the comments. If you answer, you’ll be entered in a draw for a prize.
This aren’t life or death questions, just random ones so I can learn about who’s reading the blog and maybe get some conversations going.
Todays questions is this: How do you feel about characters who are writers? Do you think the author is taking the easy way since they don’t have much research to do-because they themselves are writers- or maybe you like it because it’ gives you a larger glimpse into life as a writer? Then again, maybe you don’t care about what the characters job is since it’s really just background to the true story?

  1. I don’t mind the heroine being an author of any type. But I kinda chuckle when she’s is an erotic author and the book is erotic in theme.
I do care about the characters jobs. Not fond of reporters, male or female. Female special ops chicks don’t get me going either. I usually feel the need to smack them. I’m sure this is because I grew up military.

I feel like the characters jobs are just part of their personalities. If one is a writer I don’t see it as the author taking the easy way out as much as that’s just part of who that chracters is.

I care about the characters jobs. I mean, to me it’s important – I’m not just reading the book to see when the characters will hook up. I like to see “who” the characters are.
If the characters are authors, that’s okay with me. As long as the author writing the book puts effort into the making the character someone different, someone interesting – like I read a book one time where the hero was an author of horror novels and showed his evolution from being kind of dark to being more human. I just don’t like it when they say “hey, so Suzy here is an author” and then just throw her into something else.

I just read a book where the female character was a thriller writer. It worked for me and it didn’t. She was thinking to herself how she had writers block and went on and on and it threw me out of the story a bit.
If a book has a character that’s an Author I wouldn’t NOT read it, but I just hope it’s done well enough where I’m not getting thrown out of the story thinking to myself is this the character or the Author? Hope that made sense.

It depends. I’ve read some where it feels like it was a cop-out or even a little ridiculous, like the author was doing their own fantasy-fulfillment that just didn’t work with reality- I just read a story that was completely implausible. It was something along the lines of having their first published story be the national best-selling erotic ebook that made them millions. If only!
I like it when it works with the plot- like she is doing something for research and meets the guy or needs his input, or the guy finds out and starts acting out key scenes, or if she has a “real” job and does it on the side, etc. It just seems like almost every author has done it at some point and often it makes me groan, so I think it should be necessary for the plot or it just feels like the author was too lazy to do research on another career.
Please just don’t do the virgin erotic romance author “researching” angle. Ick. Actually, I’m so glad none of your heroines are virgins, I just hate erotic romances that have that, it really, really makes it hard for me to enjoy- there’s no way the first time she has sex she’s going to have a threesome. Or go all night, or not be self-conscious. Or orgasm.
Ooops! Getting off my soapbox now!
So, does this mean your working on a new book???
