However, that’s all I’m willing to say about that, for now. ;) Have any of you heard of the Authors After Dark conference? It’s in New Orleans this year, and guess what? I’m going. Yes, I am, and I can not wait. I’m super excited because hey, it’s New Orleans and I’ve always wanted to go there. Not only that, its the first conference that’s not RT or RWA that I’m going to attend.
Yes, I am, and I can not wait. I’m super excited because hey, it’s New Orleans and I’ve always wanted to go there. Not only that, its the first conference that’s not RT or RWA that I’m going to attend.
I’m excited to chat/party with readers, but also because several of my author friends who I haven’t seen in years will be there. Larissa Ione, Shayla Black, Mark Henry, Beth Williamson, Delilah Devlin just to name a few. Plus Yasemine Galenorn, who I’ve never met in person but who I’ve been friends with online for years. And the fabulous Joey Hill is the Mistress of Ceremonies. How can this possibly not be the best conference of the year?

YAY. I’m so excited. And motivated, because let’s face it, I need to get my ass in gear and get more shit written. Which I’m going to go do, right now. After my laundry is done. :)

I saw this quote and thought, “That sums things up perfectly.” You see, I’ve been working with a close friend who started writing just over a year ago, and yesterday she told me she was done. Maybe she’d try again later, but she she’d given herself a year to write a book, and that year was over and she hasn’t met her goal so she was done.

To my way of thinking she had met her goal. She has written a book. A 60k novel. In fact, she’s also re-written a couple of times, and written several short stories as well. While none of them were quite publishable, I saw promise in what she’d shown me. And, she’d told me she really enjoyed writing.

Last night I went see the latest Underworld with one of my neighbours. We’re both movie nuts so this is something we do often, and we always end up talking about other things as well. She’s a writer of sorts for her day job (writing website content and promotional materials and stuff like that) and she asked about how I got into writing erotica. Was it something I’d always wanted to do, was it always erotica that I wanted to write or did I have a yen for other genres…that sort of thing. As I told her the story of how I got into it, I was thinking about how easy it felt when I first started writing. I just sat down, determined I was going to achieve this career, and I wrote.

I never thought about how hard it was or how easy it was. I never thought about did I have enough description or were my characters developed enough. These things didn’t really enter into my mind, most likely because I never really took classes or anything that focussed these things.

Now when I sit down to write all these fill up my head to the point that a blank screen can freeze me up for a day, or more, if I’m not careful. I worry about if it will sell, if it’s been done before, is it what readers expect from Sasha White? Things like that….and writing has become hard.

While I’ve never been a flowery “Oh I just love writing and would do it even if I was never published” type of person, I now think back to when I looked forward to sitting down to write.

For some people education and knowledge helps build their confidence, and for others, it can crumple it. Education and knowledge has made writing more difficult for me…and it seems maybe for my friend as well. But in my mind, I think the thing that makes it most difficult for her is that at her core, she doesn’t believe in herself…and I really wish I could show her that she’s so much better and has so much more promise than she could image, but I have no idea how to do that.

This, more than anything has made it clear to me that you have to be strong to be a writer. Talent is good, but talent alone isn’t enough to make it. Perseverance and hard work are things you can’t back away from if you want this career.

A favourite scene off mine is a mutual masturbation scene in My Prerogative. But for this post I think a scene from PRIMAL MALE is better suited. Read on, and see just how sexy masturbation can be.

Drake woke up with a killer hard-on. Not the normal, half-hard lazy kind either. Before he even opened his eyes he was aware of the hot blood filling his dick and making it throb to the beat of his heart. Without thought he palmed his shaft and began to stroke. There was no soft touch, no gentle tease. His grip was firm and his strokes sure as he pumped his fist up and down. Everything was centered on his groin and pre-come oozed from the slit at the tip. His thumb skimmed over the top and he gasped at the sensation that ripped through him.
The image of Melissa filled his mind. She was on her knees in front of him, her lips wrapped around his cock, her nails digging into his naked thighs as she worked him over. She’d be good at it, he knew it. Her wide eyes looking up at him as she cupped his balls, her tongue swirling around the head, her lips shiny and slick as they moved up and down his shaft. It was too much for him, the sight of her, the feel of her, the sensations as fire rushed through him and pooled in his cock. He was going to explode.
His fist tightened and he focused on the ridge under the head. He was whole-handing it now, fingers curled, palm cupping and caressing the sensitive head with each stroke, tighter, faster. His chest heaved as he fought for breath and in his mind he saw his hands sink into a cloud of caramel hair as he took charge. He cupped Melissa’s head and held her still as he began to fuck her willing mouth. His cock throbbed, his back arched, and his hips lifted off the bed as a groan tore from his throat and pleasure ripped through him, spewing from his body in a hot stream that hit his chest and belly.

There’s a little green monster that creeps over my shoulder every time I hear and author talk about how they see scenes play out in their mind when they’re writing, or how they hear voices in their heads. This sort of thing just doesn’t happen to me. I will admit that once I get really into a story the words tend to flow, almost like I’m channelling the character, but to get to that point is not an easy thing. As much as I love being an author, I rarely look forward to sitting at the computer and writing. This sort of thing just doesn’t happen to me. I will admit that once I get really into a story the words tend to flow, almost like I’m channelling the character, but to get to that point is not an easy thing.

As much as I love being an author, I rarely look forward to sitting at the computer and writing. Which is why it’s so very important to remind myself of this quote every now and then…

Breathing hard, adrenaline flowing, and heart pounding, Max Cooper eyed the incensed alien in front of him. Her petite height and delicate features might fool some people into underestimating her, but not him. He saw the controlled tightness of her lean muscles as she slowly circled him; her eyes darkening and her skin glowing almost silver. He knew she could spring into action in less time than it took him to blink. At least she wasn’t wearing her usual assortment of weapons.

Then again, he thought, the weapons would never distract him as much as her naked swaying breasts and ripe nipples. The second he glanced at them he knew he’d made a mistake. Almost faster than he could see, she was on him. Literally.

Firm thighs wrapped around his waist and damp heat rubbed against his belly. He caught hold of her tiny waist and stumbled. Turning, he stepped forward and pinned her to the inner wall of the spaceship, his body instantly going from fight mode to fuck mode.

“Mine, Max,” she growled. “You are mine, and I am not willing to share.”

“Yet you expect me to share you. It doesn’t work like that, Tyla.” Gripping her ass cheeks, he hefted her higher and pressed his forehead against hers. “If you want me to share you with other transplants, you have to accept that other Tritons will want me, and I’ll have no reason to say no to them.”

“You have the right to say no to anyone!”

“If you’re having sex with others, why should I?” He tangled one hand in the dark curtain of her hair and tugged back her head so he could meet her gaze.

Her bright green eyes flashed with fire, full of turmoil and passion.

“But I am Triton! I am used to sexual freedom!” Her thighs tightened around his waist, pulling him so close that the only thing keeping him from entering her was the flimsy material of his drawstring pants.

“So what?” The strength of his emotions surprised Max. “I’m human, and I agreed to stay on board this ship, and be transplanted on a whole different planet-for you! ” The flare of jealousy when he’d seen one of the other transplants put his hands on Tyla had been like a knife to the heart. It hadn’t mattered that it had been a Durian; he knew she had absolutely no interest in sex with one.

All that had mattered was another man had put his hand on her, and that she’d just smiled, instead of cutting it off at the wrist like she should have. He’d never been a possessive man before.

Then again, he’d never been in love before.

Unable to handle the new emotions rumbling around in his gut, he’d done what any normal guy would do. He’d ignored them, and tried to distract himself by flirting with the nearest female. Most normal guys, however, wouldn’t find themselves instantly transported to the captain’s quarters of a spaceship to face off with a naked and angry alien, Captain Tyla Natori.

His abductor.
His sponsor.
The woman for whom he’d agreed to give up life on Earth.
